You need to call the admissions office to find out what the best way is for you to communicate that information. Most likely you will need to send an e-mail thru the campus student portal, but find out for sure before you do.

suggestions for twitter: you can always tweet about your new journal entries or update with links about admissions that you don't necessarily have the time to write a whole blog about

also, question:

i'm taking two classes at a local CC so i can hurry and finish my GEs at UCI. the classes won't contribute to my UCI gpa, but if i were to apply to other colleges this coming fall, i would have to write down the grades i got in these summer classes, yes? would it negatively affect my chances if my grades for those classes aren't fantastic, assuming i take some more later on? (better than a C of course, but i'm not sure how motivated i am to try during summertime)

CC course grades are considered if you apply to transfer and if you apply to graduate school. So you may want to be a bit more motivated.

Is it repetitive to be tweeting about my blog entries?

hmm i think that lj/twitter/etc would have different audiences and someone may not have an account on one or all, so people wouldn't necessarily know about a new entry if they don't t check lj all the time. you can always keep it simple, like "new blog entry about ____ (post link)" so at least your followers would know about it if they didn't already.

and thanks for the feedback about the transferable GPA. i'm still considering applying to other UCs for transferring so i was just wondering how that would have worked out

Thanks for the suggestions! I guess I will have to go with trial-and-error and hopefully figure out a good balance before I drive everybody away :)

Just let me know if you have more questions and/or if you need any help on the transfer application.

About TAG/TAP

I am wondering if the transfer admission agreement with UCSD and UCSB and the transfer alliance program with UCLA for CCC students are for CA residents only? Or it is open to all students in the selected CCC who meet transfer requirement?

This is what UCSD said:
TAG is available to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, AB540 students, and
former UC students in good standing.

Source: http://admissions.ucsd.edu/TagBrochure.pdf
I'm guessing that means international students cannot participate in TAG.

UCSB does not specify residency requirement, but some of its TAG verbiage ambiguously points to CA residency; so the same rule may apply at UCSB as well.

Question Regarding Required High School Courses

from: Anonymous
date: July 13, 2009 1:06 am (UTC)
Permanent Link

I am a high school student and am interested in UC Berkeley because I am going to be a senior this fall. I'm writing to you because I have a question regarding the required courses that make a student eligible to apply to UC Berkeley.

These are the courses I've taken in high school so far:

Freshman: Biology, Civics, Economics, Intro to Lit, Honors Geometry, BMT1 (computers), Health, and Spanish 1

Between my Freshman and Sophomore year, I studied Spanish in the summer and tested out of Spanish Level 2, advancing to Level 3.

Sophomore: Chemistry, U.S. History, American Lit, Honors Algebra 2, Journalism, Newspaper, and Spanish 3

Junior: AP Environmental Science, World History, World Lit, Honors Trig & Pre-Calc, Newspaper, and Spanish 4

For my Senior year, I'm not exactly sure what my classes will be because I am still figuring out my schedule, but I know I will be taking AP Government, Newspaper, and German 1.

I have a cumulative 4.0 GPA, so I have never gotten less than an A in any class, or final exam. My goal is to be valedictorian for my class of 2010. I also got a 32 on my ACT. I have not taken the SAT subject tests yet, but I am planning to because I want to attend a school out of my state.

During my Sophomore year, I was the Features Editor for our school newspaper, and during my Junior year I was Editor in Chief, which is normally a position only awarded to seniors. I was the first junior to earn that position. I will also be Editor in Chief for my senior year.

I was also involved with SADD for two years, and was co-president of SADD during my Junior year. I worked with the group to organize several events in the school, positively influencing my classmates.

I was involved with the Diversity club, but just for one year- my Junior year.

I also just received my acceptance letter for National Honors Society, so I will be involved with that during my Senior year and I'll be doing volunteer activities for NHS. I am also going to be in the mentoring program through NHS, so I will be tutoring underclassmen.

I've accomplished all of this from my wheelchair, as I have a physical disability which prevents me from being more involved in things like school sports. However, I've never let that stop me from succeeding in whatever I set out to do, while enjoying my high school experience at the same time.

Recently I was looking on UC Berkeley's website and noticed that students applying must meet course requirements. I have met, or gone beyond, all of the requirements except for one. I do not have a class credit in Visual/Performing Arts, and according to information I found online, I must have at least one full credit of Visual/Performing Arts to apply. If you could please reply to me and confirm this, I would really appreciate it. I am hoping that my schedule for senior year is filled with AP Government, Newspaper, German, and a few Business and Psychology classes, which I am mostly interested in. Taking art classes in high school was not something I ever planned on doing, and my decision to apply to UC Berkeley or not could be based on whether I need to adjust my schedule to gain that Visual/Performing Arts credit or not.

I'd really appreciate your response on this. Thank you very much and I look forward to hearing from you and learning more about UC Berkeley.

Your profile looks excellent and you are, in fact, only lacking the VPA requirement as far as I can tell. To be eligible to apply, you have to satisfy the course requirement or test out of it:
UC-Approved High School Courses
One yearlong course of visual and performing arts chosen from the following: dance, drama/theater, music or visual art

AP or IB Examination
  • Score of 3, 4 or 5 on the AP History of Art, Studio Art or Music Theory Exam
  • Score of 5, 6 or 7 on any one IB HL exam in Dance, Film, Music, Theatre Arts or Visual Arts
College Courses
Grade of C or better in any transferable course of 3 semester (4 quarter) units that clearly falls within one of four visual/performing arts disciplines: dance, drama/theater, music or visual art
Alternatively, you can bypass all the requirements using Eligibility by Examination Alone. But I would recommend that only as a last resort.

A.T.P. ?

Hi Ms. Sun

I've been hearing alot about a certain program/factor that has been said to be and EXTREMELY covincing factor for uc-college admissions counselors. I've been told the name is A.T.P. Essentially it stands to allow a student based off uc-eligibilty and scoring 85 percentile on a standardized test. i.e. ACT or the SAT

Nope. The UC schools are research institutions and tend to focus on the good old academic disciplines and some professional disciplines. Fashion merchandising would be considered to be more of a vocational field.

UCSB to UCLA?

Hi Ms. Sun,

I have just completed my first year at UCSB, and am thinking about transferring to UCLA. I am in the honors program, my gpa is 3.2 and I am planning to raise it to at least 3.5+ after next quarter. My question is, will I have to finish all my general education courses in order to transfer, as well as pre-major requirements? Do you think my gpa (assuming it will be raised to 3.5 or so) will be enough to transfer? What other criteria should I be aware of if planning to transfer?

To be competitive, you should plan to complete the general education and major prerequisite requirements at your campus prior to the end of your sophomore year. Not completing the requirements could put you at a disadvantage. Better GPA will make you more competitive, so work hard to raise your grades.

Call the admissions office or your college advisor and ask whether getting a W will jeopardize your acceptance. I don't think it would, but it's better to find out for sure.

I got a letter from my school saying that I was in the top 12.5% of my grAde, therefore qualifying me for elc. However, when do I get to find out if I am actually in the top % needed to get admitted into a uc campus? So when do I get that letter and what % of my grAde do I have to be in? Thanks so much

Woohoo! Congratulations! Top 12.5% guarantees acceptance to ONE UC campus (likely Riverside or maybe Merced). Top 4% are often guaranteed acceptance to several UCs like Davis, Irvine and Santa Barbara. You should get the letter with a unique UC application ID sometime in October.

State Eligible (12.5%) and ELC (4%) will both get letters in October. You need to either use the unique ID created for you or put the State Eligible/ELC number from the letter onto the application you already created to be guaranteed acceptance.
