Thanks for the list. If my college is on the list, who should I contact at my school for more information?

Other than a a Cal representative coming to the college, what does it mean if a college someone attends is on this list?

I'm guessing you can't go wrong with any of the CCs mentioned in this post.

Hi there, my CC was listed as one of the colleges mentioned above that has a TAP agreement with berkeley but I am an international student and I heard from my counselor that there is no/very limited TAP agreements for international students. Will Berkeley's TAP still apply to me? Btw, my counselor did not mention anything about Berkeley having TAP in the first place.

Thank you

Berkeley's TAP is not an admission agreement but a program you can participate. Check with your transfer/career center for information.

The community college closest to my area does not have this program. How many benefits am I missing out on?

You will probably miss out on personal contact with Berkeley recruiters/outreach personnel, which may or may not make a difference for you.

Not quite an agreement, but...

"In the Spring of 2008, a stellar 100% of last Summer’s TAP/JKC Research Fellows, and over 90% of all TAP/JKC students who applied to Berkeley were admitted."

Kind of sounds like UCLA TAP, except with more stringent requirements.

I've heard the program is invite-only. Any truth to that? Are candidates being screened by Cal, or by participating community colleges?

You need to check with the transfer center at a CC that is participating in the project to find out more details. Its mission is "to prepare low-income and educationally disadvantaged students to be competitive applicants for transfer to UC Berkeley and other higher education institutions," so there may be some restrictions on the type of students who can participate.

I am in this program

Ms. Sun,

I am in Berkeley TAP and my Cal rep told me it really doesn't help with the admissions decisions (no priority like UCLA's TAP). However, I thought there was a high acceptance rate when one is in the Transfer Alliance Project Program? I want to go to Haas so maybe Cal TAP doesn't affect Haas admissions?

I read somewhere that students who participate in the summer research program have 100% acceptance rate to Berkeley. I think the idea is that you shouldn't expect to be admitted just because you are in the program, but students in the program tend to have a better chance of getting accepted.

I don't think there is a deadline. You just need to track down the campus representative and ask him/her to put you on the list (assuming you are eligible).

Increasing odds

Ms. Sun,
I planned to start at MiraCosta College in the fall. However, it's not included in the list of CCCs participating in the tap program. Is it worth it to reconsider my choice of CCC in order to be a candidate for this program? How beneficial is the program for acceptance into UC Berkeley?
Additionally, you commented above that the Summer Research Program is a surefire way to increase your chance of getting in. I am not underprivileged or ethnically diverse. Is there anything else I can do to improve my odds besides making top grades and participating in extracurriculars?

Thanks.

TAP only works for UCLA. Berkeley has no preference for Honors/Scholars programs.

For transfer admission, grades and completion of general education/major prerequisite requirements are absolute essential. Everything else is gravy. Berkeley and UCLA tend to favor demonstrated leadership abilities (in anything) and extensive academic achievement (thus the research programs).

TAP vs. non-TAP

Does being invited to join TAP drastically increase ones chance of being admitted to Berkeley versus going to a state university and being involved in their honor program and maintaining a high gpa?

TAP has a very good track record; I think I heard chatter that the recent admission stats are in the 80% range.

I would recommend for you to take advantage of the program since there is very little commitment on your part and you gain access to resources that are specifically designed to help you get admitted.

Does this program for Berkeley still exist? Is it the same program as TAP with UCLA? and are the benefits the same? (as far as admit %)

Yes, it should still be around. I believe the program targets low-income, first generation, and/or minority students. It's not the same as TAP since the target student population is different. The program does not guarantee acceptance, but program students tend to have higher admit rates.
